Medical Transcriptionists - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I become a medical transcriptionist?
I would like to work at MD to MD, Medical Transcription. What criteria are you looking for when you recruit a new medical transcriptionist?
- At MD to MD Medical Transcription we hire individuals who have had formal training enrolling in a course be it online or at a community college. We require medical transcriptionists who have a thorough knowledge of medical terminology. You need to have worked as a medical transcriptionist for at least three years and you need to have done so within the past five years.
- We favor candidates who have had formal training in a hospital/acute care environment; someone who has transcribed History and Physicals, Operative Reports, and multi-specialty clinic reports.
- We require at least three references of prior employers, and we speak with them over the phone. These can be transcription service owners, transcription administrators who manage large hospital transcription departments, or doctors. References from coworkers and personal friends are not considered.
- CMT’s are favored, but this is not a mandatory requirement.
Will traditional medical transcription be replaced voice recognition?
- According to the US Department of Labor “Demand for medical transcriptionists is expected to increase due to rapid growth in health care industries, spurred by a growing and aging population. Medical transcriptionist positions are projected to grow 30.3% between 2000 and 2010.”
- Voice recognition and fear that this technology will eliminate traditional medical transcription is unlikely to happen. More jobs are becoming available as more health care professionals outsource their work to transcription services. Sure, there will be some health care professionals that will go the route of voice recognition.
- Voice recognition can be integrated into the medical transcription work flow in that you as medical transcriptionists will become QC editors rather than type from scratch. Voice recognition is especially successful in medical specialties like radiology, and less successful in others. Some health care providers however, are unlikely to ever profile for voice recognition, based for example, on poor enunciation. Also, they are time-constrained and do not have the time to train software on their speech-style especially where accents need to be considered. Time in front of their PC’s takes away from consultation time with patients. Remember too, a PC cannot think like a person, and therefore minor errors will be missed.
